Hi guys,
If you are struggling to find your waka then leave it out. Remember this activity is for you to ask your whanau.
You do not have to be Māori to use a Māori form of introduction. The basis of the
pepeha is to introduce yourself by presenting your whakapapa (ancestry) or genealogical or
familial ties. That way people in the audience can connect themselves and their own
ancestry to you, or better understand where you come from and therefore who you
‘represent’.
If you are not Māori, try and identify similar geographical features associated with where
your family and your ancestors come from. If your ancestry originates from somewhere
outside of Aotearoa New Zealand attempt to find out where. What geographical landmarks
are well known to your ancestors/family’s place or origin? Often other cultures also place
value on rivers and mountains or leaders within the community.
Aim to identify these and include in your own pepeha.
